Calligraphy workshop with Shams Anwari-Alhosseyni
02 February 2025
Dear friends of the Museum for Islamic Art,
We cordially invite you to the calligraphy workshop with Shams Anwari-Alhosseyni on 2 February 2025 in the Brugsch Pasha Hall.
Language of the hand and joy of the heart: Islamic calligraphy
Islamic calligraphy is a bridge between the hand and the heart. This connection is said to be inspired by the source of the spirit, the flow of the spirit. The interaction between hand, heart and brain gives calligraphy the highest status within the Islamic arts. Accordingly, calligraphers are held in high esteem in society. Calligraphy arose from the need to artfully convey sacred and profane knowledge and wisdom. It is a rigorous science that is regarded as the ‘half of wisdom’. Its theoretical basis stems from Vedic mathematics, philosophy and cosmology. We will gain an impression of the beauty of the script and selected calligraphies from different periods. Shams Anwari-Alhosseyni will go into the craft, alphabet & connection of the letters, as well as the design of the letters in his workshop and give you practical guidance for your own calligraphy. No previous experience is necessary.
