In Memory of Hans Conrad König

We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Hans Conrad König. He passed away peacefully at his home in Minusio, Switzerland, on Tuesday 15 November 2016.

Hans was introduced to carpets by Ulrich Schürmann in Cologne in the 1960s and was to specialise in carpets from China and Chinese Turkestan as well as Ersari Turkmans. He was the principal organiser of the Second International Conference on Oriental Carpets in Munich in 1978. In 2007, he was the co-organiser of the important exhibition of classical Chinese carpets at the Museum of East Asian Art, Cologne. In 2009 he took on the role as chairman of the newly formed Sarre Club (an advisory committee for the Museum of Islamic Art, Berlin). Hans was a supporter of HALI since its conception. He was a regular contributor to the journal and his informative articles and insights will be greatly missed.
