Museum trip to Hamburg

Dear friends of the Museum for Islamic Art,

We cordially invite you to a special guided tour on Thursday, 20 March 2025, at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg (MK&G).

Programme
The guided tour consists of two parts and will present both the permanent exhibition of Islamic Art of the museum and the current special exhibition on contemporary Persian and Arabic graphic design. The meeting point will be at 10.45 a.m. in the museum foyer. Firstly, Jasmin Holtkötter, Scientific Museum Assistant in the Islamic Art Collection, will guide the group through the special exhibition. After a short lunch break, Prof Dr Claus-Peter Haase, former director of the Berlin Museum of Islamic Art, will give a guided tour of the permanent exhibition of the museum's Islamic Art Collection. Afterwards you can also visit the museum's other exhibitions. Both tours will be held in German.

Travel and costs
Arrival and departure as well as catering/accommodation on site are not part of the offer and must be organised independently; we recommend one of the following train connections:

  • ICE 1606, 7:38 a.m. departure Berlin Hbf, 9:29 a.m. arrival Hamburg Hbf
  • FLX 1360, 8:09 a.m. departure Berlin Hbf, 10:10 a.m. arrival Hamburg Hbf

Museum address: Steintorplatz, 20099 Hamburg. The museum is located directly next to Hamburg Central Station. The reduced admission fee is €10 per person (concessions €8) and the two guided tours are free of charge.
 
Permanent exhibition Islamic Art
The Islamic Art Collection at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg is one of the most important of its kind in Germany. It consists of around 1,000 works from Islamic cultures from southern Spain, North Africa and West Asia to India and spans the period from the emergence of Islam in the 7th century to the present day.

Special exhibition
Inner Structures - Outer Rhythms: Contemporary Arabic and Persian Graphic Design
The exhibition ‘Inner Structures - Outer Rhythms: Contemporary Arabic and Persian Graphic Design’ at the MK&G presents current developments in Arabic and Persian typography. On display are posters, videos, animations, murals, installations, books and fonts by 33 designers and studios from Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) and the diaspora. The exhibition shows Arabic and Persian graphic design as equal currents that inspire each other and make a significant contribution to the global design discourse.
