Workshop Talk ‘Who knotted it?’

09 April 2025

Dear friends of the Museum for Islamic Art,

The carpet restorer and curator Anna Beselin and we would like to invite you to the workshop talk ‘Who knotted it? Poland vs. Turkey - A new provenance of a so-called Ushak carpet?’ on 9 April 2025 from 17:00 in the carpet workshop, Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 6, 10117 Berlin.

A so-called medallion ushak (ident. no. I. 4928) has been in the possession of the Museum of Islamic Art since 1927. As the name suggests, the production of this group of carpets is usually localised in Ushak, Central Anatolia. Not this piece, however, which is characterised by a knotted coat of arms of the Grand Marshal of Lithuania Christoph Wiesiolowski (17th century). For decades, researchers have assumed that this carpet was made in Poland. But is this really the case? The pros and cons of this attribution will be presented in an open workshop discussion.
Comparative examples from the collection will be on display, as well as the sibling piece from the collection of the Royal Wawel Castle in Krakow, which will be scrutinised using illustrations.
