Project Start „Cultural x Collabs Weaving The Future“
23 September 2023
Dear friends of the Museum for Islamic Art,
We cordially invite you to the launch of the participatory project „Cultural x Collabs. Weaving the Future“ on 23. September 2023. The open air event will start at 12:00 on Museum Island. From 18:00 onwards, we invite you to a reception in the Löwenfoyer of the James-Simon-Gallery.
The star of the project is the woven doppelgänger of the Caucasian Dragon Carpet from the 17th century, which was partially burned during World War II and is currently exhibited in the Museum für Islamische Kunst in the Pergamonmuseum. Woven in 2022, this doppelgänger will be cut into 100 fragments on September 23, 2023, and sent to individuals around the world with the support of DHL. It serves as a tangible link between the museum and people during its closure period due to renovation. The museum's online portal "Islamic·Art" and various social media platforms will document the journeys of direct interactive exchanges with the continuously changing owners of the 100 fragments. The 100 fragments aim to bridge boundaries, highlight commonalities, and inspire the opening of a shared future, creatively and playfully. With the return of the fragments for the reopening of the museum in 2027 the narratives of the 100 fragments will reunite into a shared story. The people involved will come together, exchange ideas and share their experiences. They get to know each other, the carpet and the museum.
