When: Friday, 20 May 2022 from 5:30pm.
Where: Auditorium, James-Simon-Gallery, Museum Island
Registration required. You can book your free ticket online here.
Cultural identities have become a central point of contention in public discourse. Museums have a significant influence on the shaping and perception of these identities: they are repositories, research sites and places of mediation of material cultural heritage. Social change also challenges museums. Especially those with collections from the Islamic cultural area have a special responsibility in view of the current polarization on the topic of "Islam".
What contribution should museums make to social discourse? How can they contribute to the public perception of the diversity and ambiguity of Islamic and global art history(s)? How do museums need to change in order to be accessible not only to initiated educational circles, but to a diverse society?
In a panel discussion, museum experts will talk about their concepts, methods and insights. Together with the audience they want to find out what possibilities there are to make Islamic art, archaeology and cultural history experienceable, both on a collective and on an individual level.
The panel discussion will be held in English with simultaneous English-German translation.
